Goodman, Amana and Daikin
Daikin, the Japanese HVAC maker, bought Goodman in 2012. Goodman builds both the Goodman and Amana brand air conditioners, heat pumps and furnaces, and the two brands share most of their design and parts. Daikin branded central systems come out of the same company. If you own an Amana unit, everything on this page applies to you too.
The most common Goodman AC problems
- Outdoor unit hums, fan does not spin. A weak run capacitor or a seized fan motor. This is the most common summer repair on any brand.
- Thermostat calls for cooling, nothing starts. A pitted contactor, a tripped breaker or disconnect, a blown low voltage fuse on the furnace or air handler board, or a float switch that shut things down because the drain backed up.
- Runs constantly with weak cooling. Dirty filter, dirty outdoor coil, low refrigerant from a leak, or a compressor that is wearing out.
- Indoor coil leaks. Refrigerant leaks in the indoor evaporator coil are a known weak spot on many brands, Goodman included. A leak search tells us whether the coil can be repaired or needs to be replaced.
- Communicating system faults. Newer Goodman and Amana variable speed systems use a communicating control called ComfortBridge. Fault codes show on the board's display. Write the code down before you reset anything.
What you can safely check yourself
- Thermostat on Cool, set at least 3 degrees below room temperature, fresh batteries if it uses them.
- Replace the air filter. A clogged filter is the most common reason a coil freezes.
- Check the AC breaker in the main panel and the disconnect box next to the outdoor unit.
- Clear leaves, plants and stored items from about 2 feet around the outdoor unit. With the power off, rinse the coil gently with a garden hose.
- Ice on the lines or the indoor coil? Set the system to Off and the fan to On until it melts. Running a frozen system can damage the compressor.
Leave the rest to a technician. Capacitors hold a charge after the power is off, and refrigerant work requires EPA certification.
How old is my Goodman?
The data plate on the outdoor unit lists the model and serial number, and the serial number encodes when the unit was built. Formats have changed over the years, so if you are not sure how to read yours, send us a photo of the plate or we can read it on site. Age matters for warranty coverage and for knowing which refrigerant the system uses.
Refrigerant: R-22, R-410A and R-32
Older Goodman units use R-22, which is no longer produced. Most units from about 2010 through 2024 use R-410A. New Goodman, Amana and Daikin residential systems use R-32, following the 2025 federal move to lower impact refrigerants. These refrigerants cannot be mixed. If your system is low, it has a leak, and adding refrigerant without fixing the leak only delays the next breakdown.
Repair or replace a Goodman AC?
On a unit under about 12 years old, a capacitor, contactor, fan motor, drain or thermostat repair is almost always worth doing. Replacement starts to make more sense when the compressor fails on an older system, when an R-22 system has a major leak, or when the indoor coil fails out of warranty on an aging unit. We give you both options in writing with prices, and you decide.
