  3. Check the AC breaker in the panel and the disconnect next to the outdoor unit (reset a tripped breaker once only).

Tip

Common problems and what they mean

Cold air in heat mode

Reversing valve, defrost control or a refrigerant problem.

Outdoor unit covered in ice

Light frost is normal. A solid block of ice means the defrost cycle failed.

Runs all night, house still cool

Sizing, airflow or a leak. We measure before guessing.

Loud whoosh now and then

Usually normal defrost. Grinding or banging is not.

Pro tip

Keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves and plants. A heat pump works in both seasons and needs good airflow all year.

I don’t have enough good things to say about WY&G. They are professional, fast, and do quality work. I had a lengthy issue that required working with a home warranty and manufacturer’s warranty that WY&G was able to help me resolve. They are great with communicating and always called me back promptly. I will definitely be using them again.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why does my heat pump blow cool air in winter?+

Air from a heat pump feels cooler than a furnace, but if the house is not warming, something is wrong.

Do you repair all heat pump brands?+

Yes.

Is a heat pump repair expensive?+

It depends on the part. You get a written price before any work.

Should I replace an old heat pump?+

If it is over about 12 to 15 years old and the compressor fails, replacement usually makes more sense.
