York, Coleman and Luxaire are one family
York, Coleman and Luxaire residential systems were built for decades under Johnson Controls, and the three brands share cabinets, controls and many parts. York's lineup runs from the LX series up to the Affinity series, its top tier with variable speed models. If you have a Coleman or Luxaire unit, read this page as if it names your brand.
The most common York AC problems
- Outdoor unit humming, fan not turning. A weak run capacitor or a seized fan motor, the most frequent summer repair on any brand.
- No cooling, thermostat looks normal. Tripped breaker or disconnect, a pitted contactor, a blown low voltage fuse on the indoor board, or a float switch shutting things down because the drain is backed up.
- Runs all day, air not cold. Dirty filter, dirty outdoor coil, a refrigerant leak, or a weak compressor.
- Water at the furnace or air handler. Clogged condensate line or a full drain pan.
- Fault light on the board. York furnaces and many York control boards have a status light that flashes a pattern when there is a problem. A photo or short video of the flashing light helps the technician start in the right place.
What you can safely check yourself
- Thermostat on Cool, set at least 3 degrees below room temperature, fresh batteries if needed.
- Replace the air filter.
- Check the AC breaker and the disconnect next to the outdoor unit.
- Clear about 2 feet around the outdoor unit. With power off, rinse the coil gently with a garden hose. No pressure washer.
- Ice on the lines? Set the system to Off and the fan to On until it melts.
Stop there. Capacitors keep a charge after the power is off, and refrigerant handling requires an EPA certified technician.
How old is my York?
The data plate on the outdoor unit shows the model, serial number and refrigerant type, and the serial number encodes the build date. York has used several formats over the years, so send us a photo of the plate or we will read it on site. Age and refrigerant type are the two biggest factors in a repair or replace decision.
Refrigerant on York systems
Older York, Coleman and Luxaire units use R-22, which is no longer produced. Most units from about 2010 to 2024 use R-410A. New York residential systems use R-454B. A low charge means a leak. We find and repair the leak first, then charge the system to specification, so you do not pay for the same refrigerant again next season.
Repair or replace a York AC?
On a unit under about 12 years old, repairs to the capacitor, contactor, fan motor, drain, board or thermostat are almost always worth doing. If the compressor or indoor coil fails on an older system, especially one that runs on R-22, replacement is usually the better value. We give you both options in writing with prices before any work begins.
