What the photos show

Before: a weathered metal box with a stained, rusted cover. Inside, the terminals show heat marks, there is dirt and debris at the bottom, and the copper wires are bunched loosely below the fuse block.
After: a new DiversiTech fused disconnect with fresh fuses, a clean whip to the condenser and a cover that closes properly.
What the disconnect does
Every central AC and heat pump has a disconnect box on the wall within sight of the outdoor unit. It lets a technician cut power safely at the unit, and on a fused model it also protects the condenser if something inside draws too much current. When the box wears out, the AC can lose power, run on and off, or trip the breaker.
Signs your disconnect needs a look
- Rust on the cover, or a cover that no longer closes.
- Buzzing or a burning smell near the box.
- The outdoor unit stops while the thermostat still calls for cooling.
- The breaker for the AC trips again and again. See AC tripping the breaker.
- The AC does not start at all. See AC not turning on.
Do not open the box or pull the fuses yourself. It carries 240 volts. If you see scorch marks or smell burning, turn the AC off at the thermostat and call us.
