About Lennox
Lennox got its start in the 1890s building riveted steel furnaces in Iowa. It's now based in Texas and is one of the big names in home comfort. Lennox is known for high-efficiency, quiet equipment, and for selling mostly through its own dealer network instead of general supply houses.
That last part matters for repairs, and we'll get to it below.
What Lennox offers
Lennox groups its home equipment into three collections:
- Signature: the top collection. Variable-capacity air conditioners and heat pumps, variable-speed furnaces, and the quietest operation in the lineup.
- Elite: the middle collection. Two-stage equipment and strong efficiency.
- Merit: the entry collection. Reliable single-stage systems at a lower price.
Lennox builds central air conditioners, heat pumps, gas furnaces, air handlers, coils and indoor air quality gear. It also sells ductless mini-splits. The S40 smart thermostat is Lennox's own control, and it's designed to work best with Lennox equipment.
What's new with Lennox
The big change is refrigerant. Starting in 2025, new central AC and heat pump systems sold in the US moved off R-410A to lower-impact refrigerants, mostly R-454B or R-32. Lennox chose R-454B for its new residential systems. Your existing R-410A system is still legal to run and repair. The catch is that new and old refrigerants don't mix, so a new outdoor unit usually means a matching new indoor coil too.
Lennox has also been leaning into variable-capacity heat pumps and cold climate heat pumps, along with connected controls that can flag problems early. For a Santa Clarita home, the variable-capacity models make the most sense if you deal with uneven temperatures or you're sensitive to noise. The S40 thermostat can show system alerts on your phone, which sometimes saves a service call.
How Lennox compares
Lennox is a premium brand, priced in the same range as Trane and Carrier at the top end. Its Signature equipment is among the most efficient you can buy for a home.
The honest trade-off is parts. Many Lennox parts, especially boards and controls on the higher-end systems, are sold mainly through Lennox's own parts stores. That can mean a short wait on certain repairs compared with brands whose parts sit on every supply house shelf. Common parts like capacitors and contactors are easy to find. If you value low noise and top efficiency, Lennox is a strong choice. If fast, cheap parts are your priority, a brand like Goodman or Rheem may suit you better.
Common problems we fix on Lennox systems
The Lennox issues we run into most:
- AC blowing warm air: failed capacitor, contactor, or a coil leak.
- System won't start: error code on the control board, tripped safety, or a communication fault.
- Blank or unresponsive thermostat: power loss at the furnace or a wiring issue.
- Furnace blowing cold air: flame sensor, igniter or pressure switch.
- Clogged condensate drain: common on attic furnaces with an AC coil on top.
- High electric bill in summer: dirty coils, low charge, or a system running nonstop.
