Most common causes
- Burner cap out of place. If the cap is not sitting flat and centered on the base, gas does not flow to the igniter evenly and the burner will not light.
- Wet or dirty burner. Spills, boil overs, or cleaning water can clog burner ports and soak the igniter, so the spark cannot reach the gas.
- Clogged burner ports. Food and grease can block the small holes in the burner head.
- Dirty or cracked igniter. The igniter is a small ceramic piece next to the burner. Grease or a crack can weaken or misdirect the spark.
- Spark module or switch problem. If the burners click when knobs are off, or click without stopping, the spark switch or module may be wet or failing.
- Gas supply problem. If no burners light, the gas valve may be closed or there may be a supply problem.
What you can safely check
- Turn all burners off and let the cooktop cool.
- Remove the grate and burner cap. Wash the cap with warm soapy water and dry it completely.
- Clear burner ports with a straight pin or a soft brush. Do not use toothpicks, which can break off inside.
- Wipe the igniter gently with a dry cloth and make sure it is completely dry.
- Put the cap back so it sits flat and centered, then try the burner again.
- If you smell gas, turn off the burners, do not use switches or flames, leave the house, and call SoCalGas or 911 from outside.
Call a technician if
- The burner still does not light after cleaning and drying
- The igniter keeps clicking when the burners are off
- You smell gas at the cooktop
- The flame is yellow, uneven, or lifting off the burner
What affects the repair cost
Cleaning and reseating parts is often all it takes. If an igniter, spark switch, or spark module needs replacement, it is usually a moderate repair. We diagnose first and quote before any work.
