Most common causes
- Evaporator fan iced up or failing. The fan behind the freezer wall can hit ice or wear out its bearings. That causes a squeal, chirp, or grinding sound that gets louder when the freezer door is open.
- Condenser fan dirty or failing. The fan near the compressor at the bottom back can collect dust or wear out, making a rattle or buzzing sound.
- Compressor trying to start. A click every few minutes followed by silence, while the fridge gets warm, often means the start relay or compressor is failing.
- Ice maker filling or dumping. Buzzing when the ice maker fills and a thud when ice drops are normal. A buzz with no water reaching the ice maker can mean the water supply is off.
- Loose drain pan or grille. The drain pan and bottom grille can rattle against the frame when the compressor runs.
- Refrigerator not level. A fridge that rocks or touches a cabinet or wall can vibrate and amplify normal sounds.
- Normal operating sounds. Gurgling, hissing, and popping during defrost and refrigerant flow are normal. Newer refrigerators with variable speed compressors may also run longer and change pitch.
What you can safely check
- Open the freezer door and listen. If the noise gets louder, it is likely the evaporator fan, often from ice buildup.
- Make sure the refrigerator is level and not touching the wall, cabinets, or other objects.
- Unplug the refrigerator, remove the bottom grille, and vacuum the condenser coil and fan area.
- Check that the drain pan underneath is seated and not rattling.
- If the ice maker buzzes, make sure the water supply valve is open, or turn the ice maker off if the water is not connected.
Call a technician if
- Grinding, squealing, or scraping that does not stop
- Clicking every few minutes while the fridge is getting warm
- A loud buzz from the back along with poor cooling
- Burning smell or a very hot compressor area
What affects the repair cost
Fan motors are a common and moderate repair. Noise from ice on the evaporator fan usually means a defrost part also needs repair. Compressor and start relay problems vary by model. We find the source of the noise first and quote before any work.
