Heater & Furnace Repair in Laguna Hills, CA
Most Laguna Hills homes heat with a gas furnace in the garage, attic or a closet. Because winters are mild, many of these furnaces run only a few weeks a year and dust builds up on the flame sensor and burners. Larger Nellie Gail homes may have several furnaces in different attics. We clean, test and check for carbon monoxide on every heater repair.
Furnace and heat pump repair in Laguna Hills
Most Laguna Hills homes heat with a gas furnace, but heat pumps are more common than many people think, especially in condos, in remodeled homes and where an old AC was replaced with a system that heats too. We repair both. Our furnace repair and heat pump calls here usually start the same way: the system worked last winter, sat all summer, and now does not heat right.
Common furnace problems
- Short cycling or lockout from a dirty flame sensor or a weak igniter.
- Overheating on a clogged filter or a blocked return. See furnace short cycling.
- Several furnaces, one problem. Larger homes in Nellie Gail Ranch may have two or more systems, and owners often notice the one that failed only when a room stays cold.
Common heat pump problems
- Cool air in heat mode. A few minutes of cool air during defrost is normal. Cool air all the time points to a stuck reversing valve, a failed outdoor fan or a control problem. See heat pump blowing cold air.
- Outdoor unit runs, house stays cold. Often the thermostat is set up wrong for a heat pump, or the backup heat strips are not coming on.
- Ice that never clears from the outdoor coil. Turn the system off and call; running it iced up can damage the compressor.
Because a heat pump runs its outdoor unit all year, the coil and the electrical parts see twice the wear of an AC-only condenser. More on heat pump repair.
If your CO alarm sounds
On gas furnaces we check the flue and test for carbon monoxide every time. If the alarm goes off, leave the house, call 911, then SoCalGas. Wait to go back in until they say it is safe.
Replacing a furnace or switching to a heat pump
If the furnace is old and the AC is near the end too, you can replace both with a matched furnace and AC, or move to a heat pump. Which is better depends on your ducts, your electrical panel and how you use the house. We look before recommending, and replacements are permitted with the City of Laguna Hills. You get a written price for each option.
Quick checks
- Thermostat on Heat (for heat pumps, not Emergency Heat unless we told you to).
- Clean filter.
- Outdoor heat pump unit not blocked by leaves or covered by a tarp.
- Breakers for both indoor and outdoor units on.

Frequently asked questions
How often should a Laguna Hills furnace be serviced?+
Once a year in the fall is enough for most homes here, since furnaces run lightly.
Can you check all the furnaces in a large home in one visit?+
Yes. Let us know how many systems you have when you call so we plan the time.
What is Emergency Heat on my heat pump thermostat?+
It turns off the outdoor unit and heats only with the backup electric strips. It is meant for when the heat pump has failed. Running on it all the time works but uses a lot of electricity.
Why is steam coming off my heat pump outside?+
That is usually the defrost cycle melting frost off the coil. It is normal if it stops within several minutes.
Do you repair package units on the side of the house?+
Yes, both gas and electric package units and heat pump package units.
How fast can you come?+
Same day in most cases, 24/7 for emergencies.
Do you check for carbon monoxide?+
Yes, on every heater call.
