Heater & Furnace Repair in Porter Ranch, CA

Porter Ranch furnaces are usually in the attic or a garage, and big homes often have two or more. We repair high efficiency and standard furnaces, and many Porter Ranch owners also ask us about better filtration when we are there. We can add or upgrade a media filter cabinet.

Furnace repair in Porter Ranch: big homes, more than one system

Furnace repair in Porter Ranch often starts with figuring out which furnace failed. Large homes in the older gated communities from the 1980s and 90s commonly have two or three furnaces, one in the attic and one in the garage or a closet. Newer homes in Hillcrest and Westcliffe usually have high efficiency furnaces, zoning systems or heat pumps. When only part of the house is cold, it is usually one system, not all of them.

Heating problems we see in Porter Ranch

  • One zone cold, the rest fine. On a zoned system, a stuck zone damper or a failed zone panel can block heat to part of the house even when the furnace runs well.
  • High efficiency furnace error codes. Plugged condensate traps, pressure switch faults and vent issues. Wind off the Santa Susana Mountains can affect vent terminations on the hillside.
  • Ignition faults on older units. Worn igniters and dirty flame sensors on the 25 to 30 year old furnaces in the original neighborhoods.
  • Heavy filters, weak airflow. Many owners use thick, high rated filters. If the blower cannot pull air through them, the furnace overheats and cycles. We check that the filter and the blower match.
  • Heat pump questions. Newer homes sometimes have a heat pump with gas backup. If it switches to gas too early or too late, the settings need adjusting. See heat pump repair.

What we check on every visit

We confirm which system covers which part of the house, read the error codes, and test the full startup sequence. Then the safety side: heat exchanger, flue joints, gas connections and a carbon monoxide test. On multi-system homes, if we find a problem on one furnace we will tell you if the others look like they are heading the same way. See furnace repair.

Repair or replace?

In a multi-system home you do not have to replace everything at once. We look at each furnace on its own: age, condition of the heat exchanger, and the AC paired with it. When one system is at the end of its life, replacing that one alone is often the sensible move. You get written prices. Porter Ranch is in the City of Los Angeles, so replacements are permitted through LADBS. See furnace installation.

Carbon monoxide: what to do

If your CO alarm goes off, do not look for the cause. Get everyone out of the house, call 911, then call SoCalGas. Call us once the fire department or the gas company says it is safe to go back in. Every heater repair we do includes a carbon monoxide test and a look at the flue and gas connections.

Safe checks before you call

  1. Thermostat set to Heat, a few degrees above room temperature, with fresh batteries if it has them.
  2. Look at the filter. If it is gray and packed, replace it.
  3. Check the breaker and the service switch next to the furnace (it looks like a light switch).
  4. Make sure the furnace door or panel is closed tight. Most furnaces will not run with it loose.
  5. Figure out which thermostat controls the cold part of the house, and whether the other systems are heating. That tells us where to start.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can you improve my home air filtration?+

Yes. A media filter cabinet or a higher MERV filter that your system can handle is the usual upgrade. We check that the blower can move air through it.

Is Porter Ranch inside your service area?+

Yes, Porter Ranch is covered from our Santa Clarita base.

Only half my Porter Ranch house is cold. Is the furnace broken?+

Maybe not. In a home with two systems, one may have failed. In a zoned system, a stuck damper or zone control can block heat even when the furnace is fine. We test both.

Do you work on zoned heating systems?+

Yes. We repair zone dampers, zone panels and thermostats, and we can rebalance airflow between zones.

Should I service all my furnaces at the same time?+

It is usually easiest. One visit in the fall covers every system before the cold weather. See our heating tune-up.

How fast can you come?+

Same day in most cases, 24/7 for emergencies.

Do you check for carbon monoxide?+

Yes, on every heater call.
