Heater & Furnace Repair in Stevenson Ranch, CA
Stevenson Ranch furnaces from the original construction are now 20 years old or more, and many sit in the attic. At that age we pay close attention to the heat exchanger, the inducer motor and the flue connections. Stevenson Ranch is unincorporated LA County, so any replacement is permitted through the county.
Furnace repair in Stevenson Ranch: original equipment at 20 plus years
Most calls for furnace repair in Stevenson Ranch come from homes still running the furnace the builder installed between the mid 1990s and mid 2000s. These are usually attic furnaces in two story houses, one unit feeding both floors through long flex ducts. They have been reliable, but this is the age when the parts that move and the parts that get hot start to fail.
What fails on an aging attic furnace
- Inducer motors. A grinding or whining sound before the burners light is the warning. When it stops, the furnace will not start.
- Hot surface igniters and flame sensors. The most common cause of a furnace that tries and gives up. See flame sensor and ignition repair.
- Limit switch trips. A clogged filter or a collapsed duct makes the furnace overheat. It shuts off, cools down, and starts again, over and over.
- Rusted or loose flue pipe in the attic. We check every joint where the flue goes through the roof. A leak here is a carbon monoxide risk.
- Condensate leaks. On homes that already switched to a high efficiency furnace, a clogged drain can drip onto the ceiling below.
Cold rooms upstairs
When the bedrooms over the garage never warm up, the furnace is often fine and the duct is the problem. Old flex duct sags, tears or comes off its fitting in the attic. We look at the duct run to the cold rooms as part of the visit and tell you what we find.
Repair or replace?
If the furnace and AC are both original, a major repair on either one is a good time to price a replacement. A matched system, or a heat pump that heats and cools with one outdoor unit, is a common choice here. Stevenson Ranch is unincorporated LA County, so a replacement is permitted through the county, and many neighborhoods have HOA rules on equipment placement. We handle both. Read about furnace installation, or see furnace repair for the repair side.
Carbon monoxide: what to do
If your CO alarm goes off, do not look for the cause. Get everyone out of the house, call 911, then call SoCalGas. Call us once the fire department or the gas company says it is safe to go back in. Every heater repair we do includes a carbon monoxide test and a look at the flue and gas connections.
Safe checks before you call
- Thermostat set to Heat, a few degrees above room temperature, with fresh batteries if it has them.
- Look at the filter. If it is gray and packed, replace it.
- Check the breaker and the service switch next to the furnace (it looks like a light switch).
- Make sure the furnace door or panel is closed tight. Most furnaces will not run with it loose.
- If you hear the furnace start and stop every few minutes, turn it off at the thermostat and note how long each run lasts. That helps us find the cause faster.

Frequently asked questions
How long do furnaces last in Stevenson Ranch?+
Often 20 to 25 years in our climate, since they run fewer hours than the AC. Age alone is not a reason to replace, but safety checks matter more as they get older.
Should I replace the furnace and AC together?+
If both are original, usually yes. A matched system runs better and you pay for installation once.
Should I have my original Stevenson Ranch furnace inspected even if it works?+
At 20 plus years, yes. A yearly safety check covers the heat exchanger, flue and gas connections, which are the parts that matter most as a furnace ages. See our heating tune-up.
Can you fix a furnace in a tight attic?+
Yes. Attic furnaces are the norm in Stevenson Ranch and we work in them every day. We protect the ceiling and the walkway while we are up there.
Why is my upstairs so much colder than downstairs in winter?+
Heat rises, but with one furnace and long attic ducts the upstairs can still lag. Leaky or disconnected ducts are the most common cause. We check them before suggesting anything bigger.
How fast can you come?+
Same day in most cases, 24/7 for emergencies.
Do you check for carbon monoxide?+
Yes, on every heater call.
