Heater & Furnace Repair in San Fernando, CA
Wall furnaces are the most common heaters in older San Fernando homes and apartments. They are simple but need regular safety checks, especially the venting. We repair them, replace them and test for carbon monoxide every time.
Furnace repair in San Fernando: mostly wall heaters
A lot of furnace repair in San Fernando is really wall heater repair. Many bungalows and small apartment buildings in the city were built with a gas wall furnace in the hallway or living room, and that is still the only heat in many units. Some single family homes have a closet furnace or a floor furnace, and some have added central heat over the years. We repair all of them for homeowners, landlords and property managers.
Gas wall heater repair in San Fernando
- Pilot will not stay lit. Usually the thermocouple or a dirty pilot. A quick repair in most cases.
- No heat from one side. Many wall heaters are dual wall units that heat two rooms. A blocked grille or a dirty heat exchanger cuts the output.
- Gas valve or wall thermostat failure. Common on older units. We carry many common parts.
- Yellow flame, soot or a strong smell. These are signs of a combustion or venting problem. Turn the heater off and call.
- Blower add on not working. Some wall heaters have a small fan. When it fails, the heater still works but heats the room slowly.
Every visit includes a vent check and a carbon monoxide test. See wall and floor heaters.
For landlords and property managers
We can check several units in one visit, before tenants start calling. Each unit gets a written note: what we checked, what we fixed, and anything that needs attention. If a heater is not safe to run, we shut it off and tell you right away.
Closet furnaces and floor furnaces
Older San Fernando homes with a closet or floor furnace get the same safety checks plus ignition, burner and blower work. See furnace repair and flame sensor and ignition repair.
Repair or replace?
A wall heater with a cracked heat exchanger, rust through the firebox, or a vent that cannot be made safe should be replaced. A new direct vent wall furnace fits most existing openings. If the house also needs cooling, a ductless heat pump does both and can replace window units. You get written prices before any work.
Carbon monoxide: what to do
If your CO alarm goes off, do not look for the cause. Get everyone out of the house, call 911, then call SoCalGas. Call us once the fire department or the gas company says it is safe to go back in. Every heater repair we do includes a carbon monoxide test and a look at the flue and gas connections.
Safe checks before you call
- Thermostat set to Heat, a few degrees above room temperature, with fresh batteries if it has them.
- Look at the filter. If it is gray and packed, replace it.
- Check the breaker and the service switch next to the furnace (it looks like a light switch).
- Make sure the furnace door or panel is closed tight. Most furnaces will not run with it loose.
- For a wall heater, check that nothing is blocking the grille. Furniture or curtains against it can make the heater overheat and shut off.
